As it has been reported, the government of Hungary has recently acquired a 20% stake in ÓAM Ózd Steel, owned by German industrialist Max Aicher.
The first meeting of the shareholders and the supervisory board took place at the site in Ózd, on 13 May 2019. Representatives have discussed details of the way forward and protocolled unanimous decisions. The Financial and Business Report 2018 has also been adopted unanimously.
Understanding has been reached about Operation 2019 and about middle and long-term plans and investments. The two sides have agreed on the schedule and joint realization of projects, supported by guarantees. The meeting ended with a tour of the plant and with a meeting with workers.
Budapest – The government has acquired from the Max Aicher Group a 20% stake in Ózd Steel for more than €30m, announced Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics at a press briefing in Budapest, on Monday.
Majority owner Max Aicher is in the middle of technology projects, enabling Ózd Steel to perform better and make more value-added products. The government stake helps secure the 500 jobs at present, or even increase their number; besides, it will greatly contribute to Hungary’s economic growth, he added.
The move is significant for industrial policies, it serves the economy and offers a chance for technological advancement in the steel industry. With the year 2010 as a clear turning point in asset management, the government considers its stake in strategic industries as a cornerstone of sovereignty, explained Mr. Palkovics.
The state can indeed be a good administrator and business partner, as the government has acquired several industries since 2010. With the steel industry facing some real challenges, its renewal plays a central role in boosting its competitiveness. It’s enough to look at the building sector, with orders amounting to HUF 25,000bn until 2023 – it is important to source raw materials for them from domestic suppliers, stressed the Minister.Majority owner Max Aicher has declared the cooperation with the Government of Hungary a success and expressed his wish to proceed forward in a similar way.
The steel industry is the centrepiece of industry not only in this community but also in the greater area, employing 500. We hope that the new technologies will boost the number of jobs, providing secure prospects for more families, said MP Gábor Riz (Fidesz).
The Prima Prizes of the county Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, going back several years now, have been awarded at the Miskolc National Theatre this year. The Prizes are awarded to persons who contribute the most to scientific, cultural, educational and sports life inside the county. The competition is organized by the Association of Entrepreneurs, county Borsod. Awardees have been invited to a gala event, where they received the coveted prizes. Among the prize-winners we find ÓAM Ózd Steel that was chosen Steelmaker of the Year. Managing director Max Aicher represented ÓAM at the event personally and received the prize.
The charity ball of the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BOKIK) and the First Miskolc Lions Club has been held on 17 February 2018. Several prizes have been awarded at the event that has become a tradition over the years, among them the BOKIK-Prize for business leaders that, this year, has gone to ÓAM Ózd Steel general manager Imre Bartha.
The revamping of Lajos Kossuth Square – the “Nation’s Main Square” – has been awarded the highest prize of the building industry. The prize has been awarded since 1999 to builders who not only create something remarkable but also improve the image of the sector. This year, the jury gave the prize in the category “complex infrastructural projects” to KÉSZ Építő Zrt. KÉSZ Építő has, for his part, recognized the performance of ÓAM, as a contribution for the award “Main Square of the Nation – Kossuth Square, Main Prize”.
The University of Miskolc, the Local Government of Ózd and the big employers in town, among them the ÓAM Ózd Steel, have signed a tripartite cooperation agreement on 3 April 2014. Uni Miskolc vice-rector dr. Zita Horváth, after the signing ceremony: we have indeed started out on a common road, but we can only be successful if we fill up the framework with contents. It is important that we work for the benefit of the local community, the university and the big employers in such a way that young people in their teens and twenties can also have real perspectives out of it.
Entrepreneurs and investors held a town meeting in Ózd on 28 February 2014, with the participation of prime minister Viktor Orbán. The main talking point was here, and later at the old industrial site, the future of the community. Several hundred people have gathered and waited for the prime minister at the old site, to witness how he symbolically started Ózd down on the road to the future.
ÓAM managing director and owner Max Aicher has been distinguished with the Honorary Citizenship of Ózd. The award has been handed over by mayor Pál Fürjes, at a ceremony remembering the anniversary of the 1956 revolution.
State Secretary Dr. Sándor Czomba, responsible for employment policy, has visited the ÓAM Ózd Steel during his stay in Ózd on 11 December 2013 and had talks with the owner of ÓAM and its management.
